Get Some Zzz

Sleep is a fundamental aspect of our lives, yet it remains a mysterious and complex process. To shed light on this crucial yet enigmatic phenomenon, researchers have turned to sleep studies. These studies provide valuable insights into the various stages of sleep, sleep disorders, their causes, and potential treatments. In this article, we will delve into the fascinating world of sleep studies and explore their significance in understanding and improving our sleep health. https://jcsm.aasm.org/doi/10.5664/jcsm.9476

Understanding Sleep Studies:

Sleep studies, also known as polysomnography, are scientific investigations that monitor and record various physiological activities during sleep. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6281147/) These studies typically take place in specialized sleep laboratories. Individuals are observed while they sleep. By analyzing brainwave patterns, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rate, breathing, and other physiological parameters, sleep experts gain an in-depth understanding of sleep patterns and detect any abnormalities.

The student's in our school don't get a lot of sleep because they are up playing video games or doom-scrolling social media on their phones. This leads to them losing sleep. Effectively making their movements slower and way less productive resulting in plummeting grades.

Why is it important for Student's:

Getting enough sleep is crucial for students for several reasons: (https://sleep.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s41606-024-00100-z)

1. Cognitive Performance: Sleep is essential for optimal cognitive functioning. It helps consolidate and retain information, enhances memory, and enhances problem-solving skills. Lack of sleep can impair attention, concentration, and overall academic performance.

2. Mental Health: Adequate sleep is closely linked to mental well-being. Sleep deprivation can contribute to increased stress, anxiety, depression, and mood swings. On the other hand, quality sleep promotes emotional regulation and resilience, helping students cope better with the daily challenges of school life.

3. Physical Health: Sufficient sleep is vital for physical health and overall well-being. It strengthens the immune system, promotes growth and development, and aids in maintaining a healthy weight. Lack of sleep has been associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and weakened immune function.

4. Attention and Concentration: Inadequate sleep can lead to difficulties in sustaining attention and concentration, making it harder for students to focus during lectures, study sessions, or exams. This can negatively impact learning and academic performance.

5. Safety: Sleep deprivation increases the risk of accidents, especially in activities that require alertness, such as driving. Students who are sleep-deprived may experience impaired reaction times, decreased situational awareness, and reduced decision-making abilities.

6. Overall Well-being: Sleep plays a crucial role in overall well-being. It helps regulate mood, reduce stress, and improve overall quality of life. Students who prioritize sleep often experience higher levels of energy, productivity, and overall satisfaction with their daily activities.

Therefore, it is important for students to prioritize sleep and establish healthy sleep habits to ensure they can perform their best academically, maintain good mental and physical health, and have an overall better quality of life.

Spirit Week

Show Some Spirit! We Contacted Mr. Collins to get information on their Spirit Week. He told us that they had the same days as us.I also took the liberty of asking a couple questions but he could only answer one which was “Do the staff/students enjoy spirit week?. I also asked Teacher Academy student's things but I didn't follow this lead as much as I should have. Overall it's just a week where student's get to dress up and have fun during the school days. I chose this topic because I want to show how friendly and lively the middle school is and what better way than to showcase their Middle School Spirit. “It's always fun to see the cool outfit choices our kids make.” -Joel Collins. In total, this is a week give to the student's to dress up and have fun, and what's a better way to show how full of spirit they are other than Spirit Week? “The kids can be crazy and Spirit Week makes their week so much more enjoyable”-Brandon Schauer
